In order for me to get any artwork done, I have taught my children how to maneuver our many remote controls so they can watch TV, DVDs, or their favorite, Instant Watch Netflix movies. Because they are so savvy with our Roku, they somehow find all sorts of strange kid movies. MC gets hooked on shows and themes for quite awhile...so far we've gone through a She-ra phase (rewatched and acted out shows complete with aluminum foil costume), "The Littles" phase (a show from my childhood that has some pretty heavy life lessons, say alcoholism and addiction...on The Littles?!), and now we've moved onto Romeo and Juliet, thanks to this bizarre seal version of the story. If I have to listen to it's weird songs and hear seals reciting Shakespeare bits one more time, I may have to purchase some ear plugs.
Because this is a new thing for her, she as usual has drilled me with questions: why don't the seal families like each other? Why won't they let Romeo and Juliet get married since they're in love? (she talks way too much about being "in love" these days, if you ask me! Help!) Why do they drink a magic potion? (thankfully Romeo and Juliet seals wake up for a happy ending...though all the seals think they're dead). This questioning led us to talking about Shakespeare on the way home, and I told her it is a very old and famous story and I have a copy at home. At MC's insistence, I found it on the bookshelf and let her have it.
She took this (see below) to bed with her last night, and "read" it with her book light. When I came in the den this morning, she was holding it. Though we've moved around the house playing, eating, and yet again watching the blasted seal movie, the book has not left her side. Just this morning we were discussing the "themes" of the book, about the bad things that come from hate, etc. This is an interesting phase, 5 year old daughter...but I'm going with it
